Power transmission: what it is and how it works
What is power transmission? What elements make it up, also according to the different applications? Let's find out in the article!
What is power transmission?
Power transmission is the complex of organs that serve to transmit power in a mechanical system. Its function is to generate movement starting from an energy of various types, which is transformed into mechanics.
Thanks to the transmission, the power generated by an engine is transferred to the final element, also called the user. The power transmission employs two organs, the drive shaft and the user shaft, the main means through which the force propagation occurs and which allow the user to move.
What elements make up a transmission
The components of a mechanical transmission change depending on the type of transmission and the application areas.
Some of them, such as bearings, couplings and shrink discs, transmit power without changing the number of revolutions. In this case, we have a transmission ratio constantly equal to one.
Other transmission components, such as freewheels, force or torque limiters, belts and chains can achieve transmission ratios other than one, sometimes fixed, sometimes variable or with continuity. The need to introduce a variation of revolutions originates from functional reasons.
Which type of transmission to choose
The selection of the most suitable transmission type for the individual application is determined by numerous circumstances, such as:
- distance between shaft,
- size,
- power to be transmitted,
- operating speed at steady state,
- transmission report to be created,
- characteristics of the engine and of the user,
- cost,
- maintenance needs.
Ringspann, with its decades of experience in the study, design and production of mechanical components for power transmission, offers a 360° service that analyzes the application with the customer and offers support in the choice.
The range of Ringspann transmission components is very broad:
- Couplings and Shaft-Hub-Connections, for one-to-one transmission ratios,
- Freewheels, Force Limiters, Torque Limiters for transmission ratios other than one,
- Brakes for the safety of systems and applications,
- RCS Cables to control applications with a remote-control system.
